The fourth graders went out snowshoeing for the first time this winter. Since the fresh snow is still so powdery and deep, they took turns breaking trail. They also packed down part of the course for the hardy cross country runners who are still doing their daily run. It was a fun but tiring time!

8th grade students are beginning their unit on genetics and are learning about DNA (the blueprint of life). To actually see and touch DNA, students completed a lab where they removed and isolated DNA from strawberries through a series of steps including mashing, filtering, and finally precipitating the DNA out of solution. Next, the students will apply this understanding about DNA and learn how traits are passed from one generation to the next.

Students from the third grade shared a STEM activity with the entire school at Friday's Wildcat assembly. Students designed and built their own bobsleds and raced them down "snowy" planks. Several students had the opportunity to practice their public speaking and did a fantastic job. Thank you third grade and Mrs. Larson for an awesome presentation!

On Tuesday, December 12th the 6th grade along with a few 7th graders went to MTU to take part in the OneUP Copper Trail Festival. The Festival focused on STEM experiments and careers. Some popular things we saw included ice cream made from liquid nitrogen, a display about the Quincy mine, and the weather station. One of our students created a paper boat that held washers, and toothpicks and was almost able to break the load-bearing record. Some of the girls participated in the Oobleck experiment and the dancing robot was a big hit also. We only spent 2 hours there, but that short time was filled with many new ideas and a lot of learning. Special thanks to our chaperones Mrs. Sturos and Mrs. Kilpela – we could not have done it without you.

Mrs. Naglak and our students put on a wonderful Christmas program Wednesday night. The program went very well with a large crowd in attendance. Afterward, the PTO hosted a dessert social. We want to thank everyone who attended! A special thanks also goes out to Valerie Koubek for playing the piano for our program!
