The fourth graders are reading the book Living on Sisu, a fictional story set in the Copper Country during the time of the copper mining strike in the early 1900’s.
They visited the Hanka Homestead, which was the residence of Herman & Miina Hanka after Herman had gotten hurt in a mining accident. The Homestead tour gave the 4th graders a picture of what life was like in the Keweenaw 100 years ago.

Friday is Plaidurday! Celebrate with us by wearing your favorite plaid tomorrow!

The Wildcat cross country team competed in the Regional Finals this afternoon at the MTU Trails. Schools participating in the meet included Houghton, Calumet, Chassell, Baraga, Copper Island Academy, Dollar Bay, Hancock, Jeffers, LL Wright, Wakefield, and West Iron County.
With a clap of thunder and the starter's gun, our runners were off battling their way through the crowded trails. What began as a run through beautiful fall weather, turned out to be a race through torrential rain, hail, and wind.
The Wildcats represented our school well, with each one of them pushing beyond what is comfortable and exhibiting the SISU spirit.
Sela Niska took first place in the girls' race. Finishing top ten in the two races were Meren Niska (7th), Liam Kinnunen (4th), and Bentley Kinnunen (5th).
Way to go athletes and coaches! GO WILDCATS!!!

The 5th-graders at E.B. Holman have been enjoying learning about rocks and minerals through the use of many different resources this year in and out of the classroom. They have been able to hold, observe, and classify rocks/minerals through an in-class collection and will have the opportunity this week to dig for fossils from North Carolina in their own individual kits and compare their finds to ones they have found in or around Lake Superior. Additionally, students were able to go on a field trip to the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum at Michigan Tech to have the opportunity to see approximately 4,000 specimens from around the world!

Good Luck to our Cross Country Runners!! Go WildCats!

Students in Mrs. Haworth's 7th grade science class complete a lab where they were tasked with separating materials in a mixture.

Good luck WildCats!

Mr. Kulju's class celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day on September 26th. Along with great books and reading activities, the class had the opportunity to taste test different apples and rank them in order by taste. They worked as a class to graph the results. Students also made beautiful lifecycle diagrams for apple trees. In addition, students had the opportunity to peel and slice apples that were then cooked down and turned into delicious applesauce. We had wonderful parent volunteers that assisted in the classroom during this fun and educational activity.

Mrs. Stone's third grade class participates in a STEM activity every Friday. This week, students used 3Dux cardboard connectors to build a house that had a window sill that could hold a pretend pie. Mrs. Stone based this activity on a story the class read this week in their language arts class titled, "The Trial of Cardigan Jones." The kids got really creative as they figured out how to use the different angles and made all kinds of accessories that also tied into the story. Students came up with some amazing creations!
