Each fall, students from E.B. Holman school travel to North Canal Park for a beach cleaning day coordinated by the school’s Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative Team (L.S.S.I.). Students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade participate in this activity. The cleanup day allows students to experience community pride, conservation, and philanthropy. The beach cleanup benefits park attendees by creating a cleaner environment to enjoy. During the cleanup efforts this fall, the students collected more than 500 pounds of garbage. The amount collected is more than quadruple the amount collected in previous years. The items found were mostly building materials such as nails, bolts, and wood a result of furniture burning on the beach. The L.S.S.I. team would like to remind those enjoying any public space to think of the safety of others, clean up after themselves, and don’t set fires in unpermitted areas.
